
Irene was born October 1, 1924 in Derby, Ct. daughter of Joseph and Eliza Purcella.
Irene is predeceased by her first and only love of 72 years, her husband, Henry N. Wheeler. She is survived by her three children, Barbara Wheeler of Southbury Ct., Henry Wheeler Jr. and his wife Denise of Westminster Md., and David and his wife Debbie Wheeler of Merritt Is Fl. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Erica Wheeler, Alison Berrios, and Andi Wheeler, one great-grandson, Caleb Berrios, and her Cousin Frankie and the Purcella family.
Irene served as Assistant City Clerk and Secretary to the Mayor of Ansonia Ct. for several years. She handled her responsibilities with enormous energy, efficiency and grace. During her life in Ansonia she was an active member of The Assumption Church. Upon retiring to Westminster, Irene became involved with St. John’s Church participating in St. Vincent DePaul Society, the Wisdom Club and the soup kitchen ministry’s for many, many years. The unwavering commitment to her church and faith touched so many lives, she in return always felt blessed to have such friends as she met throughout her many contacts at St. John’s and the soup kitchen.
Irene and Henry participated in bowling leagues where she formed friendships that lasted her lifetime and enjoyed watching sporting events with her family such as Uconn Women’s Basketball, The Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team and The New York Giants Football Team. Over the years, Irene was a solid supporter of the Special Olympics and traveled to many events where her granddaughter Erica participated.
Irene enjoyed the simple pleasures of sitting in the sun and listening to her music. She will be remembered by anyone who knew her by one simple word. PEACE. “Peace means Irene”.
Irene will be resting peacefully alongside her husband Henry at the St. John’s Columbarium in Westminster Maryland. Donations can be made in her name to The Maryland Special Olympics or to The St. Vincent DePaul Society.
