Cape Canaveral
Leslie (Chief) Loren Jones of Cape Canaveral cast off on his final patrol on November 19, 2011. Chief, born November 13, 1919 in Ludlow, Vermont was raised in Elmira, New York, and joined the US Navy to serve his country in 1938. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Chief answered the call for men to serve in the submarine force. He participated on multiple combat patrols in the Pacific theater on board the Plunger (SS-139), S-38 (SS-143), and Salmon (SS-192). After the war Chief continued to serve on his beloved submarines including the Sirago (SS-485) and Grampus (SS-523). After twenty years of service Chief eventually “retired” to Cape Canaveral. There he worked for Belcher and Coastal Oil as the chief engineer on the Virginia B transporting oil from the Port to the FP&L and Orlando Utilities plants. After his second retirement Chief would love to visit and meet family and friends at the Port, especially Seafood Atlantic , and Nolan’s Pub, where he enjoyed his Guinness. To the staff at both locations the family wishes to give their deepest thanks for the great hospitality and memories he always had there.
Chief is reunited with his beloved wife Dot and is survived by his step-children Pam van Heiningen (Eric), Phil Spoerle (Cindy) and Joe Spoerle (Patty).
He was a proud member of the American Legion 359 and the Submarine Veterans of World War II.
A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23 at Brevard Memorial Park.
