Michael Rodney Neal, Sr.

February 27, 1941 – August 1, 2026

The family of Mike Neal sadly announces his passing on August 1, 2026. He was the steadfast heart of his family—a loving husband of 61 years, a devoted father, a very proud grandfather, and a loyal friend.

Born on February 27, 1941 in Quincy, Illinois, Mike lived a life marked by kindness, integrity, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. He was happiest when surrounded by family, whether sharing conversations, lending a helping hand, or celebrating life’s milestones together. His quiet strength, generous heart, and dependable nature left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Mike earned his bachelor’s degree in Education from Florida State University, and later received a master’s degree in Counseling from Rollins College. He began his career teaching science at Lockhart Junior High School in Orlando. He then moved to Brevard County in 1968 and helped open Jefferson Junior High School in Merritt Island, where he also taught science. In 1971, Mike became a guidance counselor at Cocoa High School, where he dedicated himself to helping generations of students until his retirement in 2003.

At the center of Mike’s life was his family. He shared a devoted marriage with his beloved wife, Josie, building a home filled with love, laughter, and support. Together they raised two sons, whom he loved deeply and guided with quiet strength, steady encouragement, and the example of a life well lived. The values he instilled in his family and the love he gave so freely will continue to live on through them.

One of Mike’s greatest joys in life was being “Grandpa.” He treasured each of his four grandchildren and took a genuine interest in their lives. Whether it was keeping up with their latest accomplishments, celebrating their successes, or simply calling to see how they were doing, he made each of them feel deeply loved and important. His encouragement, pride, and love will remain with them always.

Beyond his devotion to family, Mike found joy in the hobbies and passions that enriched his life. A talented woodworker, he took great pride in creating with his hands and sharing his craftmanship with others. He was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to Florida State athletics, and rarely missed the opportunity to cheer on the Seminoles. Mike also enjoyed gardening and found peace in nurturing the things he grew. An accomplished nature photographer, he spent countless hours at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge capturing the beauty of birds, wildlife, and Florida’s natural landscapes. Through his photographs, he preserved the quiet moments and wonders of nature that brought him so much happiness.

Mike was a faithful member of Divine Mercy Catholic Church for many years. His Catholic faith remained a source of strength and guidance throughout his life and was reflected in the love, kindness, and integrity with which he lived. Over the years he shared small wooden crosses with family members and friends as simple expressions of his faith and care for others.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Josie; his son, Rod (Beth) Neal, and their children, Madeline and Christian; his son, Dan (Amy) Neal, and their children, Garrett and Drew; his brother, David Neal, and his wife, Lois; his sister-in-law, Carol Towns, and her husband, Delbert; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mildred Neal, and his brother, Dennis Neal, who was initially listed as missing in action during the Vietnam War and was later declared killed in action.

Visitation will be held at 10:30 with a funeral Mass to be celebrated at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 1940 N. Courtenay Parkway, Merritt Island, FL 32953, on August 15, 2026, at 11:30 a.m with a reception to follow.
