He served honorably in the United States Air Force (previously, Army Air Corps) and retired from USAF reserves as Major. During his time in the military, he served as a pilot and flight engineer. He made a career in electrical design at the Electric Boat and retired in 1981 as a supervisor.
Richard was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Church. He was also previously a member of the zoning committee in Groton, CT, Elks Lodge, and was an Eagle Scout and scoutmaster. He loved sailing and was a member of the Shennecossett Yacht Club. He enjoyed reading and watching old movies. In his youth, he excelled in athletics. He played golf, tennis, and basketball.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 66 years, Kathleen "Kie" Barrows as well as his granddaughter, Taylor Abt.
Richard is survived by his wife, Patricia Barrows; two sons: Robert L. Barrows and Richard "Gary" Barrows (Karen); three daughters: Nancy B. Garwood (Richard), Janet B. Abt (Henry), and Joan M. Burth; eight grandchildren: Erin, Erica, Tara, Beth, Christopher, Jonathan, Nicholas, and Austin; as well as four great-grandchildren: Eliza, Elaina, Noelle, and Rowan.
