Sonia Cabaniss

Merritt Island

Sonia Cabaniss, 55, passed away Thursday May 30, 2013 at La Casa. She was born in Rockledge, FL, growing up in Merritt Island. After graduating from Merritt Island High School, Sonia and her first husband were blessed with a daughter Angela. They moved to Ft. Pierce, Ft. Hood, TX, Hawaii, and South Carolina. The final move was back to Brevard County. In 1994 Sonia and Barry were married.

Sonia enjoyed riding her Honda, water and snow skiing, and she loved to dance.

Some of her proudest career accomplishments were with the City of Cocoa, McDonnell Douglas, Bamsi, and Lockheed Martin. She received numerous awards from her career at the space center.

Sonia also was involved with the Williams Syndrome Foundation and she was an advocate for handicapped children in Brevard County.

Sonia is survived by her husband Barry; children Angela Smodell and Jarred Cabaniss; parents Larry and Joyce Curvin; father Jim Speigner; grandmother Louise Glover; brothers Mike and Dennis(Laura) Speigner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Sonia’s life will be held on Tuesday June 4, 2013, 2:00pm at Wylie-Baxley Merritt Island Funeral Home.
