Barbara Jean Armacost was born in Richmond, Indiana on June 4, 1927 to Amos and Mary Armacost. She graduated from Jackson High School in Campbellstown, Ohio in 1945. On May 10, 1947 she married the love of her life, Clarence Griffis, upon his return from serving in the Navy. Their three children are: Linda Lee (Gibson, husband David), Brenda Sue (Spurlock, husband Mike), and John Randall "Randy" Griffis (daughter-in-law Cynthia Smith Griffis).
After raising their family in Campbellstown, Barbara and Clarence moved, along with Randy, to Mesa, AZ in 1973. There they bought and managed a successful business, M & S Sporting Goods, for four years. Barbara then worked ten years and retired from the City of Mesa in the Building Permits Department.
She enjoyed giving back to her community and was a member for over 50 years of Delta Theta Tau Sorority, a service-oriented organization. Her spirit of giving was also apparent in her 10 years as a volunteer in the surgical department at Desert Samaritan Hospital in Mesa.
Barbara loved to read and enjoyed the beautiful, lively hummingbirds that frequented her balcony feeders. Throughout her life she had many devoted, loyal friends and remembered all with "Thinking of You" messages of encouragement and birthday cards. She never forgot anyone. Barbara also loved her home-town church and lifelong membership at Campbellstown United Church of Christ.
Among those who miss her dearly are grandchildren: Amos A. "Tony" Gibson (Stacy), Brooke Andrea Tomblin (Andy), Jennifer Ellen Sherman (Lucas), and Ryan Michael Spurlock. Great grandchildren are: Lacie Marie Gibson, Briana Michelle Gibson, Tori Michelle Tomblin, Gracie Ivon Tomblin, Elliott Michael Sherman, Chloe Teresa Sherman, and great-great grandchild, Bentley Little. Special friends are Suzee and Joe Everhard.
Barbara's passing leaves a big hole in the hearts of those who loved her, but we rejoice in her reunion with loved ones in heaven. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute to Hospice of the Valley as thanks and appreciation for their devoted care. Hospice of the Valley, 1501 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ, 85014. God called Barbara home, and she is now set free.
