My first and dearest childhood friend was Bertha. From the moment we met in first grade at Harding School, we became close friends, as close as sisters. As we walked together every morning to school, we shared many thoughts, mostly about what boys we liked. On our way home after school, we talked about what time we would meet to play. On a hill just below her house were trees with many branches. We would built a "house" using sheets Bertha brought from her house  and spread them over the branches. We even separated the "rooms" into a kitchen and living room. We had such fun pretending to be visiting each other for tea using her play tea set with our dolls in our arms. We weren't able to use the sheets for long because each time we had to take them off the branches they would tear. Bertha's mom found out how the holes in her sheets got torn and that was the end of our pretend house. Then we would use the car in her driveway to play chauffeur, one of us the driver taking the other to wherever she wanted to go. Sometimes it was to the beach or Disneyland. We walked to school together through seventh grade and shared many thoughts. The funniest one was when we made fudge to sell. It didn't quite set and we had to put a glob of it on wax paper. It did taste real good so we sold every little bit of it. Of course the cost was 10 cents each so it went fast. We laughed a lot afterward. 
I don't know Bertha's children but I want to say to them that Bertha was always a sweet and loyal friend. Even after I moved to California we continued to write to each other.  I was so proud of her when she became a nurse  because she had spoken of becoming one after she was a Mommy first. I'm happy for her and for her family that both of her dreams came true. I now live in Delaware but I think of Bertha and know one day on the Paradise Earth, we will see each other again. Thank you for allowing me this time to reminise and share my memory of my dearest friend Bertha.

My Dear Childhood Friend, Bertha, We were best friends all through grade school and we had so much fun during that time. After I moved to California, we didn't stay in communication but I thought of you now and then. I was so glad that I went to the 25th Superior High School Reunion because we got to see each other and catch up as friends do. Then we lost touch once more. Bertha,   I would  love to have you here at this moment , but I know that 
can't happen in  real  life, I  Remember the day that we met at Mesa 
community college me with a big bag and a heart full of dreams you asked  what's
the big bag , I said it's my license from Mexico, she was like really ? when she saw it,  she was like
you do not need to bring that anymore,  I believe that you are a nurse,  i said  really no one 
else did  before JULY 2004 with MCC, ENFERMERAS EN ESCALERA  when everything STARTED.
Thank you Bertha, not only for the program that changed so many live's but for
all your lessons, your support and your trust, I loved the way you were always proud of who you 
were Hispanic  pride and Nurse pride! you always said to me if you do good things for other that will 
come back you.
I will continue to make you proud of what I do, always thinking of my community, my family and any
time I can help some one, I will do it just like you did Bertha will all you heart. RIP MI QUERIDA AMIGA, mentor and

I have known Bertha for over 9 years now. She is second to none! She had such a strong passion for nursing and a lovely nurturing touch when it came to nurses and nursing students. She was gentle in her approach but stern in the advice she gave. She had a way of talking you into doing things. When I gave into her I never regretted it!! I have been led into wonderful and unforgettable opportunities because of her. I can never thank her enough for all that she has done for me in my life. I am who I am as a professional and even some ways as a person because of her. I “grew” up with Bertha, she brought me up to know what it means to be a Hispanic nurse. I will be forever in her debt and I will never forget her. I will miss breakfast meetings at your house, phone calls to chit chat about NAHN, your presence at our board meetings- we need you to keep us on our toes!!! I miss you SO much Bertha. 

Thank you Lord for bringing her into my life. I pray that you give her family comfort, embrace them with your tender love. Let them find strength and peace in You during this time of mourning. Surround them with the Holy Spirit. May Bertha rest in eternal peace at Your side Lord.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Bertha and I go back so many years. I met her in 1964 at the ASU College of Nursing and we were fast friends for 55 years. We both were in Public Health together and I loved her dearly. She will
always be in my heart and I miss her so much. She was so courageous through out her battle and 
her spirit and courage were an inspiration to all .  She  never let go of her optimism and willingness
to do whatever she had to do to keep living and fight through the side effects of her treatments .
Bert I will always love you and pray for your soul .
Lord please keep Bert in your loving arms and may her soul be resting in peace. May she feel love and bliss and joy and be surrounded by love and bliss and joy and thank you Lord for putting her in my life . May her family have comfort in this sad time .

I am blessed enough to be her niece.  I will forever be grateful for her support, advice, and the confidence she put in me throughout my nursing journey.  I always told my now colleagues that she is an impossible act to follow but I would do my best! I know this, if I become half the nurse she was, I will be amazing!

 I’ll miss your motivational lectures you gave me whenever we talked.  You were so happy when I told you I was starting my BSN, except when I mentioned not at ASU! It’s ok though at least I’m not going to that other school either ! You were the coolest and I’ll miss your calming voice! Love you and see you in paradise tia Bert, rest well you deserve it !

She loved her grandkids!! I was so sad to hear about her passing. My daughter and her granddaughter have been playing softball together for years now. She was always at her games cheering her on and we loved to sit next to her and watch them together. She will be missed at the softball fields but know that she’s watching and supporting her grandchildren always. Prayers and condolences to the family. We love you! 


Bertha was my mentor and role model. I met Bertha at the Enfermeras  en Escalera program at Mesa Community College. Bertha believed in me when nobody else did  and gave me the opportunity to participate in her program. She was kind, wise and always gave me advise She was always willing to help and tackle challenges nobody else would. I am so honored to say I was one of her students and mentees and I hope one day to be as good of a nurse and role model as she was.... I am forever grateful for the opportunity she gave me. I will always remember you Bertha Sepulveda. AKA  My Hero.

I knew Bertha only for a very short time. Our granddaughters are on the same softball team at Westwood High it was always nice to sit together at the games we talked and found we knew a few of the same people. I mentioned to her that I loved her hair color she said it had grown out that color after her cancer.  The last time we seen  each other we hugged said bye and see you next year. I was glad the season was starting because  I was looking forward to seeing her again  Than my daughter calls me to tell me the sad news.  Rip Bertha 💕

I too have many wonderful memories of Bertha. Once when we visited her cabin in Strawberry and were driving back to the city, she insisted we make a detour and head to her home town of Superior. Bertha showed me all the places that had special meaning to her. What I remember most was how she shared happy memories of her parents, her siblings and her extended family. The love and pride she had for her family and Superior was very moving and touching.......

I have many wonderful memories of Bertha and my other cousins.  My Nana Belen & my Tia Elvira were sisters.  So, we spent lots of time at my Tia & Tio Sepulveda.   As years went on,  my mother (Esperanza) & Bertha kept in touch & visited when they could.   
Ten years ago, my mother developed Alzheimer's.  Bertha was always available for her & us. She was a kind,  smart,  caring , funny woman.  She always put others before herself. Her selflessness & devotion will not be forgotten.  Love you Prima. 

I’ll never forget the endless, late night poker parties with my parents and cousins at my Aunt Bertha’s house. I love her. I find peace in the fact that her fight is over and she is at rest.
