Carolyn “Casey” Jones was born August 6, 1934 in Louisiana and was adopted by Clyde and Evelyn Jones of Clarksdale, Mississippi, where Clyde owned the Gulf station as Carolyn grew up. After high school, Carolyn attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. There she earned an associate’s degree in radio and TV broadcasting.
Carolyn married Leroy G. Schock March 5, 1955 and they were blessed with 3 children. They lived in Long Island, NY while Leroy was an F-86 pilot in the Air Force. Leroy later took a job at Boeing, and they moved to the Seattle area, living in Issaquah, WA; Palmdale, CA; Houston, TX; and Knoxville, TN. Carolyn later reunited with her high school sweetheart Alton Gillen, her second husband. They lived in Crystal River FL, then Mesa, AZ, until his death in 2009.
During the years she was raising a family Carolyn worked at the Issaquah Library. Carolyn loved to travel the world and was in many countries, and worked as a travel agent and travel writer. She survived the Iran revolution, getting out of Iran on the last seat, the jump seat on one of the last airplanes out. One time in India she accidentally toured one city on the back of a motorcycle. Later she became a columnist for the Clarksdale Press-Register.
Carolyn loved to read and research whatever anyone was interested in. If someone was asking her a question, she would pull out her resources and try to help them. She also enjoyed collecting medical supplies from her community to be used at Project Cure in Tempe.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents Clyde and Evelyn Jones, her first husband Leroy Schock, her second husband Alton Gillen and many other family members. She is survived by her children, Stephen (Tracy) Schock of Issaquah, WA; Clyde “Randy” (Karen) Schock of Mesa, AZ and Linda Schock. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Sarah Schock, Stephanie Schock, Michael Merchant, Kayla McDonald (Jessie Grubbs) and Synthia Barnes, and great-granddaughter Lucy Grubbs.
Services will be held August 21 at 10AM at Apache Wells Community Church in Mesa AZ. She will be laid to rest with her parents in Clarksdale, MS.
