Carmen Silva Magallon-Laffey

Carmen Silva Magallon-Laffey, aged 85, passed away on July 9, 2026. She was born on July 16, 1940, in El Paso, Texas. Carmen, of Austin, Texas, will be remembered as a beloved presence in the lives she touched—kind‑hearted, compassionate, and faithful, with a steady work ethic that showed in both her commitments and her care for others. Her life was deeply rooted in a strong prayer faith, which guided her actions, sustained her spirit, and shaped the gentle strength she carried throughout her life.

She graduated from Neumann Catholic High School in Sterling, Illinois. Carmen was a proud member of Lions International, living out her values through community connection and service. Later she earned a master’s in education from the University of Minnesota. Her dedication to learning and service shaped a life marked by purpose, perseverance, and strength.

Carmen devoted her professional life to education, serving in roles with St. Paul Technical Vocational Institute and St. Paul College of Business. Through her work, she carried forward a sincere concern for others, offering support that was felt long after it was given.

Beyond her career, Carmen found joy and purpose in the many interests that filled her days. She loved to travel and explored countless destinations throughout her life. Her passions were wide and heartfelt—music, oil and rock painting, crossword puzzles, and caring for the pets she adored. She was also exceptionally skilled with her hands, gifted in upholstery, sewing, crocheting, and knitting. These creative pursuits reflected her patience, artistry, and the hardworking spirit that defined her.

Carmen is survived by her son Richard Gonzalez (Sandra); daughters Iracema McCann and Yvette Magallon‑Miller (David); grandchildren Nicole Borgeson (Jacob) and Julian Gonzalez; and great‑grandchildren Jude Borgeson and Leif Borgeson. She is also survived by siblings Ignacio Castaneda and family, Ventura Castaneda and family, Alfred Silva and family, and Tony Ortiz and family.

She is preceded in death by her parents Ignacio Silva and Manuela D’Avila; sisters Consuelo Castaneda, Ascension Castaneda, and Mary Keller; and brothers Joseph Castaneda and John Castaneda.
