Charles Edward Grates of Mesa, Arizona passed away on January 22, 2014 after a brief illness. Charles is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary June Grates (Essenmacher), their five children, John Grates, Mary Kamego, Theresa James, Janie Lennert and Laura Smedema; 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Albert Grates. Charles was preceded in death by his daughter, Julianne Grates, his brother Bud Grates and his parents Mary and Frank.
Charles was born at home in Harbor Beach, Michigan on February 19, 1922. He graduated from Harbor Beach High School and then served as a Merchant Seaman during World War II. During his service, he sailed the Great Lakes, as well as the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Charles retired from the Chrysler Corporation and moved to Arizona with his wife in 1986. During his retirement, he enjoyed traveling throughout Arizona, fishing, gardening, and trips to Laughlin, Nevada. He was also known as an avid recycler of his found treasures. Charles was a parishioner at All Saints Catholic Church.
The family will be holding a private memorial service.
