Dean England Flagg, 90, died on June 23, 2014, at Mesa, Arizona. He was born on May 1, 1924, to Neal and Gladys (England) Flagg at Sherman, Illinois. He attended grade school at Sherman and graduated from Williamsville High School in 1941. He spent one year at Springfield Junior College before attending The Ohio State University.
Dean served in the U.S. Army and in 1945 earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. He practiced in Wyanet, Illinois, and later moved to Moorhead, Minnesota, to serve as a meat inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 1951, Dean became an assistant state veterinarian in Bismarck. In 1960, he was appointed State Veterinarian and he served in that capacity until his retirement in 1987.
He married Thelma Mortenson of Moorhead in 1945. She passed away in 1965. He later married Lyla Smith of Bismarck. Since retirement, they spent winters in Mesa, Arizona, and summers in Bismarck until 2010, when they moved to Mesa.
He leaves to mourn his wife; two sons, Gary (Laura) of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Marshall (Vicki) of Bismarck, one daughter, Jody (Gary) Braunberger of Bismarck; one stepson, Michael (Lauren) Smith of Chandler, Arizona, and one stepdaughter, Paula (John) Fulton of Tucson, Arizona; one brother, Merle (Lottie) Flagg of Dallas, Texas; eleven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother, Glenn, one sister, Mary Koritz, and one stepson, Jeffrey Smith.
He was a member of the AVM; NDMVA; Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck; St. Peter Lutheran Church, Mesa; and the Elks Club.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 10:30 a.m., at Fairview Cemetery, 2929 E. Century Avenue, Bismarck.
