Domenick Nicosia, 84, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Rockford, Illinois, passed away October 23, 2019, in Mesa. He was born in 1935 in the seaside Sicilian town of Siculiana in Italy, known for its pristine waters and nature reserve.
As a young man, Domenick raced his bicycle to and from Agrigento and quickly earned his independence, moving to Toronto, Canada, to seek work at 16. Shortly after, he moved to the United States and settled in Rockford, where he met the love of his life, Rose, to whom he married at 22. Their life and love together lasted six decades.
Always mild-mannered and attentive, he and Rose raised two sons — Joseph and Vince. Domenick was neighborly, hard-working and easy to please. He had a voracious appetite — never one to leave an empty plate or turn down a second bowl of pasta.
Domenick was a machinist for many years, a champion gardener and skilled handyman. Sundays in Rockford were passed surrounded by family after church service playing Scopa, an Italian card game. He was a man of simple pleasures: an espresso before bed and a tidy lawn to be proud of.
He was a force to be reckoned with on the Bocce Ball Court and grew the sweetest Swiss chard. An avid walker and friendly neighbor, he was known for his even temper and eagerness to lend a hand.
Domenick and Rose followed their sons to Mesa in 1983, where they worked, married and started families of their own. Domenick cherished time spent with his family and six grandchildren — watching them grow, teaching them how to fix things around the house and bringing his grand appetite and light-hearted spirit with him. Domenick is remembered by his sons, grandchildren and friends. Arrangements are entrusted to Mariposa Gardens.
