

Born on April 15, 1936, in Holly, WV Doy was the son of James Amos Gillespie and Roena Florence (Prince) Gillespie. From humble beginnings, he built a life defined by integrity, hard work, and compassion for others.
Doy graduated from Grand Valley High School in Orwell, OH and pursued higher education at Kent State University and The Ohio State University. He later earned an accounting diploma from La Salle Extension University, reflecting his lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.
In 1954, Doy proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country honorably for four years, including two years stationed in Okinawa. His military service was a source of pride throughout his life and exemplified his enduring sense of duty and patriotism.
Professionally, Doy devoted more than 33 years to Molded Fiber Glass Companies, where he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues through his leadership and dedication. Following that career, he continued his service-oriented work at Ashtabula County Medical Center, serving more than five years as Vice President before retiring in 1997.
Doy also believed deeply in giving back to his community. He actively served numerous industry and community organizations and was a former member of the Buckeye Local Board of Education in Ashtabula, Ohio. His steady guidance and generous spirit touched many lives over the years.
Faith was a cornerstone of Doy’s life. He was a longtime member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Ashtabula, OH and later became a cherished member of Victory Lutheran Church in Mesa, AZ. Through his churches, he formed treasured friendships and faithfully served his congregations with kindness and humility.
He was preceded in death by his wife Rosemary Lee Gillespie (Benak); his parents James Amos Gillespie and Roena Florence (Prince); his brothers Okey, Glenn, Charles, Richard, Luther, and El (“Joe”); and his sister, Edith.
Doy leaves behind his loving children, Kim Leslie Best of Tennessee and James Paul Gillespie of Georgia, along with countless dear friends, neighbors, and fellow congregation members who will remember him for his warm heart, steadfast character, gentle humor, and unwavering faith.
A memorial service will be held at Victory Lutheran Church on June 27, 2026, at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the foundation at Messiah Lutheran Church Ashtabula Ohio or to Victory Lutheran Church Mesa Arizona.
