Duane Lydell Whitfield passed away peacefully at home on June 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife of 68 years, Virginia, and their son, Kent. Born on May 20, 1936, in Windham, Montana, to Orville and Lela Whitfield, Duane spent his youth embracing the natural beauty and rugged experiences of farm life.
A dedicated educator, Duane retired in 1996 after a distinguished career as a principal in the Tempe Public School System. He enjoyed traveling the world with Virginia, always remaining a good sport about the next destination she chose to explore. In retirement, he rekindled his passion for the arts, spending his time watercolor painting and reconnecting with music through the guitar and piano. Duane was a proud veteran, having served in the 9th Infantry Division in Karlsruhe, Germany, in the late 1950s, followed by service in the Montana National Guard.
Duane is survived by his wife, Virginia; his son, Kent, and daughter-in-law, Lisa; his beloved grandchildren, Samantha and Ian; his niece, Trina Mans; and many other cherished nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed.
