

Powell Nevin, 89, passed away peacefully January 24, surrounded by his loving family. Born October 10, 1927 in Newport News, Virginia, Powell graduated valedictorian from Miller School. He enlisted in the Army and was assigned to Japan on the heels of WWII. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College, he moved to Arizona and taught at Judson School for five years and then 5th grade at Squaw Peak Elementary for 33 years. During his career as an educator, Powell was recognized for his leadership ability and was elected President of the Teachers Association. He had numerous interests and hobbies including photography and worldwide travel, taking 36 cruises. But he was most known for his ability to play the piano. If he heard the music, he could play the music. Powell is survived by the love of his life, Janet and many cousins, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please hug someone today and extend an act of kindness. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, March 4, 2017, 10:00am, Friendship Village, Skirm Auditorium, 2645 East Southern Avenue, Tempe.
