Evelyn Ilene Barnes was born November 18, 1929 outside of Olney on a 40-acre farm in Richland County, Illinois. Evelyn was the first daughter, second born child to Earl and Bernice Barnes, a family of eight children including one set of twins.
On December 28, 1947 Evelyn married Charles (Chuck) Goens in Urbana, Illinois. Evelyn and Chuck had three daughters, Gayle, Janet (1956 RIP) and Joyce. In 1963 the family relocated to Colorado, a drier climate necessary for young Joyce’s asthma diagnosis. Chuck and Evelyn moved to Tucson in 1986 after retiring in 1980, and a final move to Mesa in 1992 after purchasing property at Arizona Skies Mobile Estates. Chuck passed away on March 15, 1997.
Before retiring in Mesa, Evelyn’s hobbies included sewing, crocheting, embroidery, photography, travel, coin collecting, baking, collecting owls & coffee mugs from her travels, and playing bridge. Evelyn continued her love for shopping fashion & jewelry for herself and as gifts for others. Evelyn was generous and always had a smile to greet everyone she met.
Evelyn married Richard E. Ruhlman on November 14, 1998 in Atchison, Kansas. Evelyn met her husband Richard as neighboring property owners at the Arizona Skies Mobile Estates where both Evelyn & Richard resided. Richard and Evelyn began their 22 year marriage as partners of bridge card playing, cooking, community volunteering, and extensive travel together by air, car and boat.
Evelyn will be sadly missed by her husband, Richard Ruhlman of Mesa, two brothers: Donald &Walter Barnes; three sisters: Winona Parker, Wanda Yonce, and Sheryl Knutson; two daughters Joyce Thomas & Gayle Asbury, two granddaughters Christina Nelson-Goens & Ericka King, three great grandchildren, Connor Jansen, Emery Jansen, and Carson King (all of Colorado) with ninety-eight living Earl Barnes family members besides Evelyn’s remaining siblings.
