Evelyn Marie Shetterly

November 9, 1925 – July 16, 2024
Obituary of Evelyn Marie Shetterly
IN THE CARE OF

Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park & Funeral Care

Evelyn Marie (Douglas) Shetterly started her journey of life on a farm in rural Madison County, Iowa on November 09, 1925, with parents Lawrence Owen and Zola May (Hamblin) Douglas and departed this life on July 16, 2024, in Mesa, Arizona.

Evelyn's journey led her down the path of education in rural one room schoolhouses through 8th grade and graduating from Earlham High School in Earlham, Iowa with the class of 1943. After graduation she went to work for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Winterset, Iowa.

On April 12, 1942, at Early Chapel Church in Rural Earlham, Iowa, Evelyn answered the call of her Lord and was baptized.

Journeying on, Evelyn answered another call and on September 08, 1946, became the bride of Charles Edwin Shetterly. They met on a blind date in 1944. They became the parents of four children: Frances Maxine, Carol Lynn, Patricia Ann, and Charles Edwin Jr. Edwin's work moved them around a bit their first years of marriage then settling in Des Moines area for the next 13 years. When the children were small Evelyn was involved in some church work in Des Moines, on PTA board, leader of Blue Birds girls' group, sold Avon, Sarah Coventry and greeting cards, as well as the chores of a housewife.

In June 1962 this journey took the family on an extended vacation trip to the NW and down the West Coast arriving in Denver, Colorado eight weeks later where they decided to make their home while the children were all young enough to still be together. The family loved outings to the beautiful Colorado Mountains, and they did a lot of sightseeing and camping in them. Her journey by this time had led her back into the work field going to work for Mt. Bell Telephone Company in January 1963 and retiring from the company in February 1981.

The journey now led her and Edwin to being very active in church work, and they were both instrumental in helping start a new church in the Littleton, Colorado area. Evelyn and Edwin had several ministries together in their lifetime. They invited friends and visitors in their home for lunch many times. They would sit with families who were having surgery. They showed hospitality to guests in the church for lodging as well as serving as greeters.

They joined Ports of Call Out of Denver and went to Aruba, San Salvador (a mystery trip) and a number of trips in the US. After retirement the journey took Evelyn and Edwin travelling with their dear friends and doing some antique shows before becoming snowbirds to winter in Arizona. In 1993 they decided to make Florence, Arizona their only home. They worshipped at Caliente Club House when brother Wayne was Minister, driving to Mesa or Apache Junction for church during the summer months.

Evelyn has had several hobbies during her life's journey, and she enjoyed doing them all. She loved to sew and made clothing for the family and herself. She loved baking and decorating birthday cakes for her family and neighborhood children. She wrote a book on her life for her siblings, children, and grandchildren and even some friends. She also made Afghans. The journey in later years led her into the computer world, and she worked on several different family genealogies-each one being special to her. She had learned to play the organ. And she loved watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy on TV.

In 2002 Evelyn began to have heart problems, and her mitral valve was replaced. In January 2003 a pacemaker was put in. After three long years they were able to again do some travelling to see family.

Evelyn and Edwin were blessed with children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, but they were not able to see them often after moving to Arizona.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister (Betty Reynolds) of Earlham, Iowa and her brother (T Wayne) of Fremont, Indiana.

Evelyn leaves the following family to celebrate her life: Daughters Maxine (John) of Apex, NC, Carol (Jeffrey) Smith of Denver, CO, Patricia (Dan) O'Nan of Montecillo, Illinois, Son Charles Edwin Jr of Mesa, AZ and Sister Wilma Bobenhouse of Des Moines, Iowa.
