George John Stasiuk

Hello. My name is George Carmichael. I was a work colleague for John for many years. "George"??? So, that's something I never knew. I doubt if too many people knew his first name was 'George' -- maybe that's why he always seemed to cut me slack when we worked together. During staff meetings, any argument that ensued was calmed by his smile -- which always seemed to being on the verge on giggling. Frustrated the living hell out of me.
Although John was a humble man, he was always right, and he possessed a rock that stated it (when he retired, he passed the rock onto me - finally, he admitted it was *I* that was one that was 'not always right, but never wrong').
John was an unsung hero of our department, and was there from the early years of computing - mainframe system development, networking infrastructures, and was the one who introduced microcomputers to our department. He opened up the first computer store on campus, including negotiating agreements with IBM and Apple. John was a strong mentor to many young, aspiring computing professionals - many of those pros have left their own indelible mark on the computing industry.
After retirement, he kept in touch with his computing department alumni, joining the olds-timers once a month for coffee -- during the warm months. John was the perfect 'Snow Bird' in retirement - golf all the time during the winter months.
The folk up in Edmonton have been asking what arrangements have been made to honour John. Whether or not a formal memorial to John happens, a large community of friends and colleagues will certainly never forget this great man.
