

Howard Rubin passed from this life on January 8, 2016 after enduring the ravages of multiple cancers and related problems. Howard was a caring, thoughtful person who would help anyone who asked for help. Born in Stamford, CT. he was brought up in Chicago. When he was in fifth grade the family moved to Tucson, AZ and he attended school in Marana. At the end of his junior year in high school, he moved into the Tucson Public School system and completed his senior year at Rincon High School. After a semester at the University of Arizona he enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed a 20 year career at the rank of Major during which time he also completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Business at Cameron University in Lawton, OK. He served in Vietnam, two tours in South Korea, a year in Germany then had assignments in Fort Riley. Kansas and multiple tours in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma taking training, providing training, then developing tactics for the army. Retiring in Oklahoma he joined two friends in forming a consulting firm called L, B & M. He received a patent for developing a training device. Several years later he began work with Primary Vision Care Services in Lawton changing from military to health care work. When his wife, Mary, finally retired they moved to a home in Mesa, AZ.
Howard believed in strong families and making communities better places to live. While in Oklahoma Howard was active in Boy Scouts earning the Silver Beaver Award, Vigil Scout honor and earned his Wood Badge training status then served on teams who taught Wood Badge. He served in many positions at district and council level and became President of Black Beaver council. He was especially honored to take a troop of scouts to National Jamboree near Washington, D.C.
He joined the Rotary club, Armed Services YMCA and served a term on their national board, United Way and other organizations and boards where he felt he could make a difference by providing active service.
In Arizona he continued working with many of the same organizations and added membership in the Leisure World Lions Club, the homeowners (HOA) organization and served on boards in the Mesa community. Although a newer member of Lions, he attended district and state meetings, participating in many activities and was serving as chapter Secretary at the time of his death.
Every grandchild will remember playing cribbage with Grandpa, and the joy of beating him. He was a voracious reader and loved golf although he joked about whether or not he really played golf He also began playing bridge in the Squatters and the Men’s bridge group, enjoying the company as much as the cards.
He will be terribly missed by his wife, Mary, son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Rebecca, daughter-in-law, Patti and grandchildren Lauren and spouse T.J, Tess, Willa, Adam, Audrey and Everett.
