

James Lawrence Campbell, age 84, of Mesa, AZ, passed away suddenly on August 26, 2013 at the Banner Baywood Hospital in Mesa. He was born August 4, 1929 in Wauregan, Connecticut, the son of James Lawrence Sr. and Agnes Cecile Langevin Campbell. He graduated from Central High School, Providence, R.I. in 1948. James enlisted and served in the Military Civil Air Patrol and Air Force from 1943 – 1954. James married Jean Elizabeth Johnston on June 28, 1952 at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Providence, Rhode Island. She preceded him in death on February 19, 2008 in Ormond Beach, Florida. James had extensive Administrative and Management experience in merchandising, buying, product development and manufacturing. He traveled all over the world; working as a successful business man for various companies throughout his career. Both James and Jean were avid supporters for the ongoing survival of African and Asian elephants. The Campbell Elephant Foundation was formed in 2011 to provide financial assistance to this challenging endeavor. James was the President for this Foundation. Mr. Campbell is survived by four children: Nicole Campbell, Connie (Don) Gaston, Scott Campbell and Heather (Bob) Largent and three grandchildren: Samantha Danchuk, William Gaston and Nicolas Campbell. In addition to his wife, Jean, James was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Joseph Campbell and a sister, Theresa Bitzkowski. Arrangements are being handled by Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park and Funeral Care in Mesa. Inurnment will take place at the Garden of Tranquility, Highland Memorial Park in Johnston, Rhode Island.
