Jamie Junita Howell

Jamie Junita Howell was born on November 17, 1933, in Moscow, Idaho, to James and Myrtle (Redman) Hughes. On July 11, 2026, at the age of 92, Jamie passed away in Phoenix, Arizona, with her family by her side.

After graduating from Moscow High School, Jamie joined the United States Air Force and worked in the Aviation Electronics division stationed in Westover, Massachusetts. Once she completed her time in the Air Force, she attended the University of Idaho, where she obtained her teaching degree. From 1959 to 1964, she taught physical education at Jennifer Junior High School in Lewiston, Idaho. She married Gordon (Lyle) Howell on June 14, 1959. Together, they lived in Jamie’s childhood home and raised their four children. Lyle and Jamie were married for over 52 years until Lyle’s passing on February 7, 2012. In 2016, Jamie moved to Mesa, Arizona.

As a child, Jamie went to a one-room schoolhouse in Viola, Idaho. Her third-grade teacher, Dorothea Holland (affectionately known as Grandma Dode), was a very special lady to the Howell family, and she invited Jamie and Lyle to the fellowship meetings she attended. Jamie and Lyle both made their choice to serve God and stayed true to that commitment the rest of their lives. They were both very thankful for what they had found in Christ and the faith it created in their hearts and lives, and loved being a part of their fellowship group.

Jamie loved to work outside, taking care of her garden and plants, and enjoyed animals, including dogs, birds, and horses.

She is survived by her four children, Kym (Vivian) Howell of Superior, Arizona, Edee (Ray) Zwiefelhofer of Phoenix, Arizona; Kevin (Marla) Howell of Central Point, Oregon, and Dodee Burkhart of Superior, Arizona; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends, including a special childhood friend of 87 years, Donna BeVan. Jamie was preceded in death by her husband, her mother and father, three brothers (Chuck Hughes, Wendell Hughes, and Billy Hughes), a sister (Geneva Farnham), and one grandson (Dustin Howell).

A Celebration of Jamie's life will be held on Monday, July 20, 2026 at 10am at Mariposa Gardens; 6747 E. Broadway Rd. Mesa, Arizona 85206. The family invites you to stay for refreshment following the service.

Jamie embraced life with joy and loved color in all its forms. In honor of Jamie's vibrant spirit, the family kindly asks that guests wear colorful attire to the service rather than traditional black.
