On April 6, 2024, John David Downs went home to be with the Lord. John was born in Barberton, Ohio on March 5, 1949. He graduated from Norton High School (Ohio) in 1967. After graduation, he attended Kent State University and received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting in 1971. He married his high school sweetheart, Peggy E. Hanna, also of Barberton, on June 12, 1970.
John and Peggy spent their honeymoon in Arizona, and being tired of Ohio winters, decided to move to Arizona and make Ahwatukee their permanent home. Their family soon grew to four with the birth of their son, and then their daughter. They were married for over 53 years.
John was an avid baseball fan, first with his beloved Cleveland Indians, and then with his adopted team, the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was also a dedicated bowler, taking part in various leagues throughout the valley. He even bowled a perfect 300 game, of which he was always so proud to tell everyone about. John was always fascinated with math and numbers, so a career as an accountant suited him well. After arriving in Phoenix, he landed an accounting job at Motorola Corporation, from where he retired after over 30 years of service.
John also had a deep love and conviction of faith in God and was active in various Christian Churches in the area where they would live, or move to, through his and Peg’s life together. He loved going to bible studies and he even taught bible classes and held services at Senior Living Centers near where they lived.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Nannetta Downs, his wife Peggy Downs, and his son Timothy A. Downs (Tad). He is survived by his daughter Kelley Dunston (Josh), granddaughter Arlette Downs, brother Ken Downs (Mary), niece Beth Holland (Dave), nephew Joe Downs (Mary Anne), and several cousins and extended family members.
John was a very selfless and giving person, always helping those in need and putting others before himself. He lived a fulfilling life and now continues his journey in heaven. Rest In Peace, Faithful Servant. Your journey here is complete.
