Johnnie was born in Louin, Mississippi on January 17, 1929 to the parents of Johnnie and Estelle Newcomb. Johnnie was one of 5 children and had many memories of his brothers and sisters growing up in rural Mississippi. Johnnie spent a lot of time working with his father in the logging business and later in shipyards. One day in 1947 he saw a poster of Uncle Sam in a store window and he was looking for a way to get three square meals a day and a roof over his head, so Johnnie decided at that point he wanted to join the Air Force. While stationed in Oscoda, Michigan Johnnie met his wife to be Inis Erickson and they were married on June 2, 1951 and remained married for 64 years until Inis passed away on November 8, 2015. Johnnie and Inis traveled to many places while Johnnie was in the military and along the way raised six children. After retiring from the Air Force Johnnie helped build Tempe Diablo Stadium and remained as the head of facilities until 1974. Johnnie later worked in the specialized concrete business until his final retirement at age 62. In their retired years, Johnnie and Inis loved to have their family around them and participated in many family functions. They enjoyed their trips back to where they both were raised to visit with relatives to catch up on time lost through the years. Their little Chihuahua Rocky also brought them both very much joy.
Johnnie is survived by his six children: Frances Welch, Linda Smith (James), Fay Jungbluth (Mike), Shirley Nieves (Luis), Mary Lockhart (Lonnie), John Newcomb (Debi), along with 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Huey, Louie, Josie Rice and Inez Bufkin.
