Joe was born at his home on October 23, 1936 in Rentz, Georgia to Spurgeon and Bonnie Couey. He lived in Dexter, Georgia and later Fernandina Beach, Florida. He was a Coast Guard Cadet during high school. Joe joined the Air Force right out of High School at the age of 18. He served for 31 years and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant and was also a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Joe lived his life in the service of others. Joe was an avid golfer, loved country music, was a great dancer and loved all people.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Patricia Fortune Couey; daughter, E. Kelly (Darrin) Slade; stepsons, Johnathan and Donald Messina; brothers, Phil Couey and Charles Couey of Florida; grandfather of five and to the late Joshua and Jacob Slade; 12 great grandchildren; all The Clowns and Brothers of the El Zariba Shrine; Steve Beardsley and all of his fellow Mason Brothers; his cousins, Sid Couey, Sue Lawhorn, Brenda Woodward, Gail Odom, Bubba Woods; and many , many friends.
A visitation for Joe will be held on Monday, December 9th from 4:00pm-8:00pm at Mariposa Gardens Funeral Care, 6747 E Broadway Rd Mesa, AZ 85206. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 10th at 10:00am at Mariposa Gardens Funeral Care, 6747 E Broadway Rd Mesa, AZ 85206. Joe will be laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N Cave Creek Phoenix, AZ 85024 on Tuesday, December 10th at 1:30pm.
