Karl Derek Gomes, 72, of Jensen Beach, FL passed away on March 18, 2023, in Phoenix, AZ. Derek is survived by his wife of 21 years, Lourdes, a blended family of 6 children, 6 grandchildren, 2 brothers, 1 sister and a large extended family of loved ones. Derek was born in Aruba to the late Carl and Mary Eugene Gomes.
Derek loved his family, his country, and riding his Harley. Derek lived in Arizona for over 20 years and was a member of the American Legion and the Legion Riders of Post 11. Derek was proud that he climbed powerline poles at the beginning of his career and right up until his passing, was happy to impart his knowledge of the industry to the younger generation of linemen. Derek had the “gift of gab”, making friends everywhere he went and was a fun-loving, kind, and generous man who would not hesitate to lend a hand or a listening ear.
Derek served in the U.S. Navy from 1969 through 1975 and completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. As a combat veteran, Derek respected all members of the armed forces, they were always at the forefront of his mind, and he always wanted to help service members in any way he could. In addition, Derek had a long history of donating to St. Jude and was always passionate about families not being burdened by the cost of children’s hospitalizations. In lieu of flowers, Derek’s wife and family request that donations be made in his honor to any one of the organizations listed below.
Thank you for your condolences and support during this sad and difficult time. A memorial service with military honors will be held in Arizona at a later date (details will be updated on this site as soon as they are available).
