“Louie” was born in Gallup, NM to Alton and Kathleen (Crane) Thiele. His father worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, which began Louie’s life-long love of trains. Louie grew up in several rail towns throughout Northern Arizona, where he was often the pupil of his mother, an elementary school teacher. He graduated from Winslow High School and then attended Arizona State University, and received his Bachelor’s degree in Business.
During his time at ASU, a friend introduced him to Nancy (Ruediger). The friend thought they’d be a great match as both were exceptionally tall. The two married in 1969.
Louie worked several jobs during his college days, including summers working for the Coconino National Forest Service and nights at the ticket counter and throwing bags for Continental Airlines at Sky Harbor Airport. Louie’s time with the airlines provided opportunity for he and Nancy to travel throughout the world. Louie had an extensive career in Travel Marketing, overseeing World Travel for Arizona AAA for nearly two decades. Later, Louie became the co-creator and co-host of a syndicated travel radio program.
Louie enjoyed driving in and working on old cars; Lincolns were especially his favorite. He loved anything that went fast – motorcycles, rollercoasters, jet-skis, etc. With his garage full of tools, he was able to fix nearly anything. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends. He tried his best to be of help to everyone he knew, both personally and professionally.
Louie and Nancy’s family lived in Mesa and were active residents in their community. He became a Scout Leader, and later served on the HOA board. Louie loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching them play in the backyard, and taking them on fun trips.
Louie’s family will remember him for always coming to the rescue when the car battery died or an appliance needed repair. He held a firm disdain for glitter and Easter grass. He had a great affinity for the many uses of Windex, and he really loved orange marmalade.
Louie is survived by his wife Nancy, son Steven (Erika) Thiele, daughter Trish (Ryan) Thiele-Keating, five granddaughters and one grandson, brother Al (Charmaine) Thiele, sister Dorothea (Jon) Hultgren, six nieces and one nephew, and several great-nieces and great-nephews, who all loved spending time with and hearing stories from their Uncle Louie.
A Celebration of Life reception will be held in Mesa on July 8. Please go to https://forms.gle/cJnUEuw9kqKpSeRC9 if you would like more information.
