Mary Louise Scofield passed away at her home surrounded by family on Friday, October 23, 2020. Mary was born May 22, 1943 at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, California, to Ben and Jessie Zettel. She was the first of 3 children, and was raised in Burbank California. As a child, she enjoyed many vacations with her family, including several trips to Wisconsin to visit relatives. In 1952 Mary joined the Brownie Scouts and continued to be active with the Girl Scout organization for 9 years. During a horse-riding competition involving several troops, she was awarded “Best Rider.” In 1953 as part of the city Summer Parks Program she was crowned “Queen of Health” in a children’s competition. In her teens she enjoyed riding her bike, and caring for her parakeets. At age 14, Mary, along with her family, was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After graduating from John Burroughs High School, she went to Brigham Young University where she studied Secretarial Sciences, later changing her major to Home Economics. While home on break, she met Frank Scofield at a M-Men and Gleaners Hobo party. They were married January 29, 1966. Together they had nine children, which they raised in Burbank, California. They attended church in the Burbank 1st ward, where she notably served many years as a Sunday School teacher and a Cub Scout Den Mother. Her hobbies as an adult included genealogy, Dutch oven cooking, family camping trips, gardening, and working in the yard. She will especially be remembered for how she tried to do her very best at everything she did. She was very detail oriented and wouldn’t accept anything less than the best efforts from her children. She devoted her time to teaching her children piano, and doing home summer school. She made every holiday magical, including amazing dinner and desert tables. She was a master cookie-maker. She was very talented in embroidery, tatting, and crocheting. She had unshakeable faith, and was a diligent student of the gospel. She embodied enduring to the end, having suffered from many debilitating strokes over several years.
Mary is predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her children Laura Lee (Terry), Brian (Alisa Bradshaw), Alice Forseth (Jason Buchanan), Belinda Everitt (William), John (Juleena Jensen), Jane LeCheminant (Toby), Steven (Tracey Barber), Neil, Everett (Lindsay Ready); former spouse Frank Scofield; her sister Carolyn Zeman, her brother Roy; 21 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services are Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2835 E Des Moines St, Mesa, AZ 85213. Visitation at 10:00 am, Funeral at 11:00 am. She will be laid to rest at Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park, 6747 E Broadway Rd, Mesa, AZ 85206.
