Mel was born on April 13, 1928 in rural Harvey, ND. His early years were shaped by his family and faith, values that remained important to him throughout his life.
He served his country in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean War.
Mel spent 33 years working in banking at Minot, North Dakota, before retiring in 1988. He enjoyed helping people and built many relationships throughout his career.
When his father-in-law passed away, Mel stepped in to help on the family farm, simply doing what needed to be done. During the harvest season Mel would work a full day at the bank and then drive two hours there and back to do the harvest work.
In his free time, Mel loved spending time at the lake fishing or pulling his kids and their friends waterskiing.
For nearly 73 years, Mel shared his life with his wife, Kay Frueh. Together they built a life centered around family, faith, and the many years and experiences they shared.
Mel is survived by his wife Kay and is the father of Mark (Jean), Cindy (Harry), and Brent (Shari). He was also a proud grandfather of six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Those who knew Mel will remember a steady man who worked hard, cared deeply for his family, and could always be counted on. He was most comfortable simply doing what needed to be done.
Mel will be remembered with love by his family and by those who had the opportunity to know him.
A memorial service (with lunch) will be held Friday, October 16th at 11:00 am at Mariposa Gardens.
