Patrick Charles “Pat” Leonard, 72, passed away unexpectedly on August 9, 2026.
Pat was born on January 20, 1954, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to John Joseph “Jack” and Elizabeth Rose “Betty” Leonard. He later lived in Toms River, New Jersey, and graduated from Toms River High School South with the Class of 1972. In 1979, he moved to Tempe, Arizona, where he made his home for many years.
A skilled mason by profession, Pat took pride in working with his hands and in the craftsmanship of his trade.
In his younger years, Pat had a great love of surfing, which earned him the nickname “The Duke.” He also enjoyed skateboarding and, throughout his life, remained happiest outdoors. Hiking, camping, golfing, and fishing were among his favorite ways to spend his time. In later years, he enjoyed being the “family bookie” and competing for the family “Cactus Cup” golf trophy with his brother, Charlie, and nephew, Josh. He especially looked forward to visits from family members who could join in the fun and round out the foursome. Pat was also an avid reader who always appreciated a good book.
Music was another constant in Pat’s life. Beginning in the 1970s, he developed a lifelong love for the Grateful Dead and the music of Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir. Whenever they were playing nearby, Pat could often be found at a concert, enjoying the music that meant so much to him.
Above all, Pat had a deep love for his family and the people he considered family. He shared nearly five decades of his life with his longtime partner and companion, Helen Bixenman. They began dating in 1977 and made a home together beginning in 1978. Although they lived in different states after Helen moved to San Diego in 2014, the bond, love, and connection they shared remained an enduring part of both of their lives.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph and Elizabeth Rose Leonard. He is survived by his brothers, John, Kevin, and Charlie; his sisters, Cathy, Terry, and Beth; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. He is also remembered with love by Helen’s family, whom Pat embraced as his own, along with numerous friends and extended family members whose lives were made richer by knowing him.
Those who knew Pat will remember his independent spirit, his love of nature and music, his devotion to family, and the many years of memories, laughter, adventures, and friendship he shared with the people he loved.
Pat’s family invites those who knew and loved him to keep his spirit alive in the ways he would have appreciated most: spend some time outdoors, pick up a good book, put on a favorite Grateful Dead song, gather with the people you love, and remember “The Duke.”
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
