

Robert Gregory Bender, Jr (Bob), a decorated former Marine who dedicated 22 plus years of his life to serving his country, passed away peacefully at his home in Gilbert, Arizona on March 6th, 2026. He was 79 years old.
Born in Rockford, Illinois on March 23rd, 1946, Bob enlisted in the United States Marine Corps shortly after graduating from Harlem High School. He embarked on a distinguished military career that spanned over two decades, culminating in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Throughout his service, Bob embodied the Marine Corps values of honor, courage, and commitment. He completed a tour of duty in Vietnam from January to July of 1970, where he served as an Infantry Platoon Commander for the 3rd Marine Infantry Battalion. He was awarded the Navy commendation with Valor for his bravery.
Upon his retirement from the military in 1988, Bob continued to serve his community through his work through the church. He was a dedicated member and he cherished the camaraderie he found on his many mission trips to the Ukraine. In between those mission trips, he spent many days at the ball fields watching his grandchildren play sports of all kinds as well as many hours in the pool entertaining all ten of his local grandsons.
Bob is survived by his wife, Dianne, his children, Bob, Jim, Amy, and Shawn, and 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held to honor Bob’s life and service will be held on May 16th, 2026.
