Forever Remembering

Samuel Lee Durbin, 73 passed away on May 3, 2025. In Tempe, Arizona. Born on February 19, 1952, in Phoenix, AZ. Sam lived a life marked by creativity, independence, and a deep connection to the natural world.

A skilled carpenter with a flair for the unconventional, Sam found his calling in building and shaping the physical spaces of storytelling. He worked on movie sets for productions such as “Ninja Turtles” and “The Postman”, constructing elaborate stages that were later dismantled-only to begin again. This cycle of creation and renewal reflected his own ever evolving journey throughout his life. His craftsmanship extended beyond the jobsite; he was known as a good carpenter who brought both skill and soul to everything he built.

Sam took pride in his work as a groundskeeper at Yavapai Community College in Prescott, AZ. He spoke fondly of his time there, tending to the land with care and dedication.

For two decades, Sam made his home in the forests around Prescott, living in his big black van surrounded by his carpenter’s tools. A self-described wandered and long-hair hippie type, he embraced a lifestyle that blended solitude with freedom.

Sam moved to Tempe, AZ in his own apartment. Even while managing COPD and relying on oxygen, he continued to ride his bike and explore the outdoors he loved so deeply, until poor health prevented him from doing so. The forest had been the backdrop for Sam-now the city was his home.

Sam is survived by his daughter Samantha, her husband, and their two sons; four sisters-Valerie, Phylis, Lisa and Theresa; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded by father, James Durbin, mother, Wanda Lowe, his sister Marianna and his daughter Kitty Sue.

May Sam’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to those who value creativity, resilience, and the freedom to live life on one’s own terms.
