Born in Rockford, Illinois, on December 15, 1945, he was the son of Thomas L. Sheik I and Lois (Carr) Sheik. Tom graduated from West High School in 1964 and received an Associate’s degree from Mesa Community College.
In April of 1965, Tom enlisted in the United States Navy. During his service, he served on the USS Holland in Rota, Spain and earned the National Defense Service Medal during his service to our country.
Retiring in 1998 at the rank of sergeant, Tom worked as a deputy sheriff for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office for over 21 years. Following his career as a deputy, he was a detective for the state of Arizona for over a decade. In addition to his law enforcement career, he served his community by coaching youth sports. For nearly a decade, he spent his weekends coaching girls’ softball.
He loved westerns, John Wayne movies, and was an avid reader, often reading multiple books a week. However, his favorite pastime was watching the Chicago Cubs, especially at Spring Training games.
Tom was survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Sheik) Lugo; his son-in-law, Gregory Lugo; his grandsons, Thomas Lugo and David Lugo; his brothers, David Sheik, Steve Sheik, and Andy Sheik; his sister-in-laws, Karen Sheik and Ruth Sheik; his nephews and niece, Zac Sheik, Dan Sheik, Daryl Sheik, Chris Sheik and Heather Tewell; his cousins, Jim Carr and Christopher Sheik, and many friends.
The memorial for Thomas L. Sheik II will be held at Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park and Chapel on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The 100 Club of Arizona or The Autism Society of Greater Phoenix.
