Bill was born at home in Belfast, Northern Ireland to Sarah (nee Bunting) and Samuel Scott. As a young man he played guitar in a local band and opened for Them, a true highlight of his life. After attending Belfast College of Technology, he was offered the opportunity to immigrate to the United States through New York, to work as a machinist. He worked in Brooklyn, NY and Stamford, CT before being drafted during the Vietnam War. He joined the Air Force in 1968 to repair autopilot systems on jets and bombers and was stationed at Luke Air Force Base until 1972. His military service remained a quiet but important part of the story of his life.
His service training gave him the skills to build a successful career as a Circuit Board Design Engineer at Pitney Bowes Inc (where he held a patent), Motorola, and General Dynamics. An engineer through and through, he was always tinkering, and brought the same steady dedication to his work throughout the years.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill was known for his deep love of his family, his enjoyment of joking around and teasing his co-workers and friends, and his habit of picking up a guitar whenever one was nearby. He especially enjoyed playing with his dog Buddy.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife Lietta (nee La Bouff); children Thomas Scott, Timothy Scott, and Sarina Moir (Patrick); grandchildren Joshua and Gregory Sanders, and Peter and Colin Moir; sisters Maura Scott, Geraldine Irvine, Patricia Berrie (Iain), Rosina Scott, and Shelagh Higgins (William); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Sarah and Samuel, his sister Kathleen McKee (Noel), and his brother Samuel (Rosaleen Avery).
An Irish Wake will be held on Saturday September 12, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00 at Fibber Magee's in Chandler, Arizona.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Arf-Anage Pet Rescue. Bill will be remembered with affection for his sharp mind, his humor, his music, and the love he had for those closest to him.
