With a father that moved his family due to his career in professional baseball, Bettye ended up in Texas and became very familiar with the area. She attended school all of her life in Texas, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1947.
She went on to become a Personal Assistant at Northhaven Gardens, and then worked for Charles Garrett doing Publishing which she retired from. After retirement, she worked at the Presbyterian Church for a while and even became the first woman elder in that congregation.
An avid gardener, her yard was always alive with flowers of all kinds. She grew everything from cactus to actual flowers and had a knack for getting them to flourish. Also, she loved to play bridge and if she wasn’t hosting the game night, she was attending at least four or five nights a week and even played in tournaments.
Her family describes her as a fun woman with a great sense of humor; she was very smart and capable, an amazing speller and loved to do the crossword puzzles in the newspaper.
Bettye is preceded in death by her parents Ray and Mary; her son Karl Nelson; and her sister Mariana Koontz. She is survived by her son Eric Nelson and his two cousins.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Restland Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
