

Bobby Wayne Hopper passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026, at Dallas Regional Medical Center in Mesquite, Texas. He was born to Bobby Glen Hopper and Lola Bell Brown and was raised from the age of three by his stepfather, Joseph John Smetak Sr., the only father he ever knew. Joseph loved, guided, and raised Bobby as his own son throughout his life.
Bobby was a devoted and loving son, brother, stepfather, uncle, and friend to all whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Lola Smetak; his stepfather, Joseph John Smetak Sr.; his sister, Denise “Dee” Hopper; his stepson, James Nix; and his stepdaughter, Amanda Gardiner.
He is survived by his brother, Joseph John Smetak Jr “Bub”, wife Shawna Smetak of Mesquite, Texas; his niece, Erika Johnson; his great-niece, LolaBelle Hooks of Forney, Texas; his stepdaughter, Lori Gaines husband Todd Gaines and sons of Union Valley, Texas; and his lifelong friend, Sybil Boles of Mesquite, Texas, along with many other nieces, nephews, and several dear friends.
Bobby was raised in Mesquite, Texas, and attended Mesquite schools. During his high school football years, he was known by many as a fierce linebacker who left a lasting impression on anyone who watched him play. After graduating from Mesquite High School in 1970, he received multiple athletic offers and chose to attend the University of Arkansas.
Bobby worked as a Master Plumber throughout his life. He spent many years working for Dallas County before dedicating over 19 years of service to the City of Dallas as a Senior Plumbing Inspector, retiring in 2020.
Bobby believed deeply in Jesus Christ, family, friendship, the 12 Steps of AA, and the Uniform Plumbing Code of Texas. He also loved music, Diet Coke, old westerns, and his dog, Charlie Brown. Above all else, Bobby was a man who loved his family and friends unconditionally.
Bobby will be deeply missed by so many, but we find comfort in knowing he is reunited with his beloved sister, Dee.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Anderson-Clayton-Gonzalez Funeral Home, located at 1111 Military Parkway, Mesquite, Texas 75149, on February 21, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
