Gilbert Reyes, of Mesquite, Texas, passed away at home peacefully, on October 13, 2023, at the age of 76. Gilbert was born in Dallas, on June 5, 1947. At a very early age, Gilbert started his love for boxing, training with his uncle, Joe Gomez. Later, he trained in various boxing clubs, including the Dallas Police Athletic League, under the tutelage of Mickey Martinez. After advancing through the amateur ranks, he advanced to the Golden Gloves in FTW, in 1969. He, later, taught Boxing techniques at SFSMMA Martial Arts School, in Mesquite.
He enlisted in the Army, at the age of 17. Right before leaving for bootcamp, he met the love of his life, Gloria Mendez from Poteet, Texas. It was her first time in the big city and Gilbert had found “the most beautiful girl in the world”. On April 1, 1967, stationed at Fort Hood after his voluntary tour in Vietnam, Gilbert and Gloria were married and began their amazing, lifelong journey together. Gilbert’s love of God began to grow. Together with Gloria and their sons, their Christian walk became stronger within the years and became the glue keeping the family close.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his dad, Angel; mom, Consuelo; brother, Arthur and grandson, Alex. Gilbert is survived by his wife, Gloria, and brothers, Ray, Ernest, extended family members and numerous friends. He is also survived by his son Sean Patrick Reyes and wife Birgit, grandchildren Christianna, Adrieanna, and Joshua; his son Christopher Lyn Reyes and his wife Rafaela, grandchildren Jacob and Isabella; his son Jason Eric Reyes and his wife Dee, grandchildren Forrest, Donivan, Jayce and Sophia, granddaughter Dariene and husband Jarad, great-grandson Walker; grandson Tanner and wife Karina, great-grandson Ezra; and his son Damian Peter Reyes and his wife Melanie, granddaughter Cristie.
A celebration of life service will be held in his honor Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 12:00pm, at Lakepointe Church located at 3540 E. Emporium Circle, Mesquite, TX, 75150. The interment will be following at 3pm, at DFW National Cemetery at 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy., Dallas, Tx, 75211, and is open to all.
