Hurtha’s came from a family of sharecroppers, which was a task that involved frequent travelling to pick crops in many areas of East Texas. Moving around with her family, she lived in Forney, Texas, then moved back to West, Texas for a period of time before her family ended up back in East, Texas. She also was employed for a time at a balloon plant in Forney, Texas while her family lived there.
She met her husband on December 10, 1946 in West, Texas on a farm while visiting relatives. It was love at first sight and they married on December 27, 1946 in Plainview, Texas. After their marriage, they settled in the Dallas Area, coming to reside in Balch Springs, Texas.
Hurtha completed her education at various schools and completed school through the ninth grade.
Outdoor activities such as camping, fishing and relaxing were always favorite things of Hurtha’s to do, but what she loved most of all, besides her wonderful family, was church. A woman of the Lord, she attended a Baptist church for as long as she was able.
Her family describes her as a very giving woman. She was content in every aspect of her life. They say she was humble and always thinking of her family. Her concern for anyone was always honest and true. As a wife, her husband was her main priority and she was always his main concern. They both were honest with each other and didn’t keep a secret between them in all of the years they were married.
Hurtha is preceded in death by her parents Roy Henry Hughes and Canie Viola Hughes Creamer, in-laws Parker Lee Graham and Jesse Graham, her brothers Derl Gene Hughes and William Daniel Hughes, her daughter Ruthie Ann Graham Mallett, and her son Troy Gene Graham.
