Lester Henry Zimmerman entered into life on October 22, 1933 in Alta Vista, Kansas to Otto and Suzanna Zimmerman and he went to be with his Lord on November 4, 2016. From a young age, faith was very much a part of his life; he was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alta Vista, KS.
He married the love of his life Lillian Knigge on June 9, 1956 and they were married for 60 wonderful years until his passing.
Education played a large role in Les’s life: beginning as a young man, he attended school in a one room school house in Alta Vista, Kansas and he graduated from Alta Vista High School. After graduation, Les attended St. John’s Junior College in Winfield, KS, graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Concordia College in Seward, NE and received his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Wayne State University.
His career in Education began at the Lutheran Indian Mission School in Gresham, WI. He then served in various locations including Clintonville WI, Marengo Il, Chicago, Hong Kong, Detroit, Orlando, Cincinnati, Hawaii, Salt Lake City, and Dallas where he retired from Lutheran Education.
While serving in Hong Kong Les was invited into China in 1972, to compare Chinese and American education.
Many of his students remember him calling them “honyocks” and or “snickelfritzes” and loved to kid around. They also remember his smile, and his open door policy – always willing to lend an ear to anyone that might need it. Les, being the man that he was, loved to share Christ with all people which prompted his devotion to mission work.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lillian Zimmerman; Brothers Harris, Warren, and Leroy; Daughter Kathleen Kollmeyer and husband John; and Son Michael Zimmerman and wife Denise; Grandchildren Barbara Miller, Mark Kollmeyer, Alex Zimmerman, Matthew Kollmeyer, and Aaron Zimmerman; and Great-Grandchildren Mikaelah Hopkins, Cody Hopkins, and Cameron Stover.
Les is preceded in death by his siblings Ophelia, Melvin, and Everett.
Visitation will take place at Anderson-Clayton-Gonzalez Funeral Home on the evening of Sunday, November 6, 2016 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
The Funeral Service will take place at Bethel Lutheran Church at 11:00am on Monday, November 7, 2016, located at 11211 E. Northwest Hwy, Dallas, Texas 75238 with a viewing at 10:30am.
