Every year Pawpaw would ask us grandchildren if we knew why people were shooting off fireworks for the 4th of July. We would answer the correct answer, because it was Independence Day. He would say nope that's not why. So we would entertain him by asking what the real reason was that people were celebrating. Pawpaw would tell us people everywhere were shooting off fireworks to celebrate his birthday because he was so special.

My family would go to our grandparents nearly every Sunday for dinner. Many times after dinner we would all sit down and find a movie to watch on cable tv. Pawpaw wasn't scared of anyone or anything ... except for ANY sort of scary scene in ANY movie. So, he always had his newspaper on the end table beside his recliner, and anytime it got even remotely tense in a movie he would grab his paper and pretend to read it. He would still be watching the movie over the top of his paper. If the movie began to ramp up to a jump scare you could look over at Pawpaw, and see that his newspaper was up higher and his head had disappeared behind it. After the movie calmed back down you could look over and see him poking his his over the paper to enjoy the movie again. He always denied it and made a lame excuse as to why he looking at the paper in the first place.

I am one of the grandchildren, the oldest son of Robert's daughter, Karen. Every year on the 4th of July he would ask us grandkids if we knew why they were setting off all the fireworks. We would reply yeah because its the 4th of July independence Day. Papa would say, nope! It's for something more important. Papa would say people everywhere were celebrating his birthday, and every year we told him he was full of it.
