A long-time resident of the Dallas area, Roger built quite a life. As someone proud to serve their country as a United States Marine, he later became employed at the United States Postal Service where he worked for 24 years until he retired. After that he dabbled in real estate up until his passing.
In his spare time Roger enjoyed watching birds -- especially the robins that would frequent the little houses he decorated the backyard trees with each year -- taking photographs of the things that he found interesting, authoring short stories of all genres, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Friends and family would say that he was an avid storyteller, regaling his grandchildren with stories of the past while engaging them in a game of Denny’s, restaurant, or Monopoly, as well as a friend to all. Roger had a heart for people, and it showed in the varying parts of his life.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Jane Dyess; sisters, Mary Lee Silverwood and Gloria Dyess; brother, Charles Dyess; and his nephew, Charlie Dyess.
Roger is survived by his children, Buddy Dyess, Steven Dyess, and Sandra Dyess; grandchildren, Rachel Burkett (Kyle), Krystal Schreier (Sam), Sterling Sledge (Ellen), and Jamie Canright (Michael); great-grandchild, Gage Causey (Jenna), Khloe Canright, Devan Canright, Matthew Burkett; Great Great Granddaughter Iris Causey; Great Great Grandson Thomas Causey; nieces, Jennifer Dyess (William) and Laura Sinclair (Steve); nephews, James Dyess (Rhonda), John Cox, Alan Wayne Shelfer (Pat), and David Shelfer (Carolyn); great-nieces, Emily Sinclair, Phoebe Sinclair, Caitlin Dyess, Jillian West (Darren), Courtney Francis (Fred), and Ashley Lawrence (Jeremy); great-nephew, Wesley Sinclair; a cousin, Sandy King; great-great niece, Savannah; great-great nephew, Tristan; and he has a host of additional family and friends who have impacted his life in positive ways.
He will be deeply and dearly missed by all.
