Willie "Sam" Calverley
August 15, 1933 – January 30, 2020
Mr. Willie "Sam" Calverley died peacefully on January 30, 2020 in Flower Mound, Texas at the age of 86. Sam is survived by his son Michael Wayne and Michael’s wife, Christine of Lewisville, Texas. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Margaret Allen Buck Calverley; his father, Raymond Lee Calverley; his mother, Alice Kathryn Powell Calverley; and his brothers Jack Raymond, Jimmy Frank, Tommy Powell, and Jerry Lee.
Sam was born on August 15, 1933 in Forney, Texas to Raymond and Alice Calverley. He served our country in the Navy during the Korean War from 1952-1956. His service began at Kingsville Naval Air Station and he was then transferred to Miramar Naval Air Station where he was assigned as an aircraft mechanic aboard the USS Ticonderoga. He married Margaret Buck January 10, 1954. Their son Michael was born near the end of his tour of duty in San Diego, California in 1956. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. After completing his service in 1958, he moved his family to Mesquite, Texas where they built their home that he lived in for his remaining life. Sam spent most of his career with Teledyne-Geotech as a machinist where he worked for 35 years.
For a period of time, the family owned quarter horses and enjoyed attending the Mesquite rodeo. Sam loved the water and enjoyed spending time with his friends and family on his boat salt-water and crappie fishing. Sam enjoyed using his handicraft skills in metal-work, woodworking and leathercraft often gifting others with his finished products. Sam was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church of Mesquite and a volunteer of several years for Meals-0n-Wheels.
Visitation is scheduled for Monday, February 3rd from 6-8pm at Anderson-Clayton-Gonzalez Funeral home in Mesquite. A funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, February 4th at 11:00am at Friendship Baptist Church in Mesquite. Brother Keith Prather will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sam's life.
