Carlos Raul Diaz

Carlos Raul Diaz of Pinar Del Rio, Cuba, passed away on February 1, 2023, at the age of 92. Carlos immigrated to the New Orleans area from Cuba in 1962. As an employee for New Orleans Catholic Charities, he was instrumental in helping Cuban immigrants settle and find work in the New Orleans area upon their arrival in the city. Carlos opened the first Cuban grocery store in New Orleans, serving the growing Cuban population.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elda Trina Diaz, and his brothers, Manolo, Claro, and sisters, Noemi, Ella, and Lidia. He is survived by his brothers, Alberto, Ellis, Elier, Omar, and sister Eneida Laffont. He is also survived by his second wife, America Evelin Deleon, his son, Raul R. Diaz MD, daughters, Silvia Diaz and Jeannette Diaz, step-daughter, Melissa Deleon and step-son, Mauricio Deleon. He will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many other family members.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Visitation at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Blvd. Metairie, Louisiana, on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, from 9:00 am - 11:00 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. Inurnment will immediately follow at Lake Lawn Park Cemetery, 5454 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, Louisiana. Flowers may be sent to Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home.
