Edward Charles Bilbe, Jr., “Charlie,” born on December 5, 1940, passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of May 23, 2026, at the age of 85. A native of New Orleans, Charlie lived a life centered around family, loyalty, hard work, and quiet strength.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Diane Marie Poursine Bilbe; his parents, Norma Huertin and Edward Charles Bilbe, Sr. ; and his brother, Dennis Bilbe.
Charlie is survived by his devoted sons: Michael Charles Bilbe (Sharon), David Bilbe (Charlene), and Mitchell Bilbe (Denise). He was the proud and loving “Poppy” to Sarah Bilbe Cutrera (Brandon), Caroline Bilbe (Adeem), James Bilbe (Sam), Jane Ellen Bilbe, Annie Bilbe, Peter Bilbe, and Teddy Bilbe, all of whom brought him immeasurable joy. He was also a great-grandfather to Miles Bilbe and Andrew Cutrera.
He is survived by his siblings Lynn DeBlois, Cecilia Fugetta (Terry), Francine Foglesong (Dan), and Kenneth Raymond (Donna). He was a beloved brother-in-law to Janet Weber (John) and Marcel Poursine (Sharon) and was preceded in death by his sister in laws, Denise Boudreaux and Alice Sutherland (Gary). Charlie was also “Uncle Charlie” to countless nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
Charlie took tremendous pride in his long career as an elevator constructor, a profession that reflected his intelligence, toughness, and unmatched work ethic. He believed in doing things the right way, showing up every day, and providing for his family through honest hard work. Even after retirement, he never slowed down, carrying that same dedication and determination into a second career as a real estate agent. He enjoyed meeting people, staying busy, and continuing to work alongside and for others long after many would have stepped away.
Family and friends will remember Charlie most for his devotion to those he loved. He never missed an opportunity to support his children and grandchildren, whether celebrating their athletic achievements, academic accomplishments, or simply being present for the moments that mattered most. Beneath his tough exterior was an enormous heart, a deep generosity, and a steadfast loyalty to family and friends.
Charlie was an imposing figure; he had a way of making people feel cared for and protected. He was dependable in every sense of the word — the person others could always count on when they needed help, advice, or simply someone to stand beside them.
Edward Charles Bilbe, Jr. will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His family will forever carry with them memories of his character, his strength, and the example he set through a life well lived.
