Elaine Jill Sellers Hinojosa passed away peacefully surrounded by love and her family on Thursday, June 13, 2024. She was born to J.D. and Yvonne “Bonnie” Sellers of Greenville, Alabama in 1942. She graduated from Greenville High School, then earned a diploma in Nursing from the Birmingham Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, and soon after graduated from the University of Alabama with a BS degree in Nursing. She moved to New Orleans to pursue her career in nursing. Here, through co-workers, she and her devoted husband, Oscar Hinojosa of Staples, Texas met. They were married soon after. Together they raised five daughters who they loved dearly. She was later given the affectionate name “Grammalaine” by her grandchildren, whom she cherished watching embrace the adventures of life.
Her love of learning and zest for life led her to pursue and earn a Master of Science in Nursing from LSU Health Sciences Center. She had a lifelong career at Ochsner Foundation Hospital where she served for over 30 years as a Nurse and Nurse Educator and later as a volunteer. Her lasting legacy at Ochsner was seen through the stories and words of gratitude shared by many former co-workers and students who comforted her in her last days. She was an active parishioner of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. She had an adventurous spirit and was always the first to raise her hand to volunteer for a multitude of civic and religious organizations.
Throughout their 57 years of marriage, Oscar and Elaine, were devoted to each other, enjoyed Bunco and Trivia, square dancing, loved to try new restaurants, and supported their daughters in their many adventures. After raising their children, they enjoyed many travels with Jane and Peter Baugh, who introduced them many years before. Elaine never took her faith or God’s love for granted. She was especially grateful for the 45 years she and Oscar grew in their faith with their close-knit prayer group, Emmanuel.
Elaine gave her time, energy and spirit to so many. She enjoyed music of most kinds, playing the piano, knitting, baking, getting together with family and close friends, and was an avid reader and was a member of several book clubs and bible studies. Though she will be incredibly missed, her light will continue to shine through all who knew her.
Elaine Hinojosa was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Oscar; her brothers and their spouses, Randall and Ann Sellers, Roger and Betty Sellers; her daughters and their spouses: Anita Montero (Chris), Adelita Greeson (James), Julia Ham (Rodney), Sylvia McIntosh (Max) and Rebecca Hinojosa (Brent); grandchildren Zachary, Declan, Ava, Mason, Raleigh, Jackson, Jamie, Lizzie and Jessica; many adored cousins, nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 4921 W Metairie Ave, Metairie, Louisiana, at 11:00.
