With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Eleanor Suhre LaCombe, age 82, who was called home to Jesus on Thursday, October 31, 2024. A true New Orleans treasure, Ellie graced this world with her love and laughter, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Born on August 30, 1942, in the vibrant heart of New Orleans, she was the cherished daughter of William Suhre, Sr. and Ethel Coig Suhre. Ellie was welcomed into heaven by her loving parents, her sister Constance Suhre Collins, and her brother William Suhre, Jr.
Ellie is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, John Anthony LaCombe, Sr., and their five beloved children: Allison LaCombe Bentley (John), Cheryl LaCombe Hollier (Ricky), John Anthony LaCombe, Jr., Michele LaCombe Van Geffen (David), and Jennifer LaCombe Melton (Keith). Her legacy continues through her 14 grandchildren, who were the lights of her life: Charley Hollier Downen (Jesse), Dennis Crocker (Allie), Brittany Paige Hollier, Kaitlin Bentley Schaeffer (Wes), Andrew Crocker (Sara), Jackson Bentley, Jacob Van Geffen (Megan), Caleb Van Geffen, Seth Van Geffen, Sarah Melton, Jillian Hollier, Chris Melton, Alex Melton, and Catherine Melton, along with 12 great-grandchildren who brought her immeasurable joy: Chad, Christian, Teshub, Chase, Colton, Kamryn, Connor, Huntleigh, Allie James, Corbin, Elizabeth Anne, and Cohen. She is also survived by her sister, Ethelyn Suhre Guillory, her brother Ernest Suhre (Kathy), her sisters-in-law Jeanne LaCombe Perelli, Judith LaCombe Benelli (Danny), and Delores Suhre, a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
Ellie lived most of her life in Metairie, LA, where she was educated at Metairie Academy, Ella Dolhonde elementary school, Vernon C. Haynes Middle School, and East Jefferson High School. After high school, she became a talented hairdresser but found her greatest joy in nurturing her family. In 1979, she returned to work at Sears Roebuck & Co., holding various roles until her retirement from the Human Resources department in 1992. Even after retiring, she spread her warmth as a seasonal employee in Macy’s gift wrap department.
Beyond her varied work history, Ellie’s true passion lay in creating a loving home. She raised her five children with boundless love and later devoted herself to caring for her grandchildren, her face always lighting up in their presence. She was also an exceptional cook! A past member of the Elks 30 Ladies Auxiliary, she used her caring spirit to support community projects and holiday events for the children of Elks members.
Those who knew Ellie will forever miss her gentle nature, unwavering devotion to Christ, and steadfast character. As we gather to celebrate her life, we find comfort in the beautiful memories she gifted us, reminding us of the love she spread throughout her days.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024, at Leitz-Eagan funeral home located at 4747 Veterans Blvd in Metairie, LA. Visitation will take place from 9:00am - 11:00am with a Mass at 11:00am. Interment will be at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
Ellie’s favorite color was blue. Feel free to wear blue, if you’d like. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Alzheimer's Association in her honor.
