Elroy A. “Son” Gambino left us to join Anita, his beloved wife of 65 years, on September 18, 2024, six months short of his 100th birthday. Roy was a native of New Orleans, grew up in the Irish Channel and was a long-time resident of Metairie. He was the youngest son of Frank Gambino and Amelia Friedman Gambino. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Frank Gambino and Leon Gambino and son-in-law C. Ray Bergeron. He survived by his three loving children, Jaimie G Bergeron, Kevin Gambino Sr (Debbie) and David Gambino (Mary). Also survived by four devoted grandchildren, Kevin Gambino Jr, (Dana), Jena B Villere (Paul), Benjamin Gambino and Bryan Gambino (Jenna) along with three cherished great grandchildren, Gianna Gambino, Reid Villere, and Camille Villere, as well as nieces and nephews. Roy was a fan of all sports from football to horse racing. In retirement he continued to work with his sons in their business until just a few months before his death. He was a combat veteran of World War II who served in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific theater. He was very proud of his service and spent many hours volunteering at the National World War II Museum where he spoke to people from all over the world about his experiences. He was excited to share his stories, and they were always well received. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Sunrise Senior Living and Heart of Hospice for their care and kindness. Family and friends are invited to the services on Saturday, October 5 at Leitz Eagan Funeral Home in Metairie. Visitation will be from 10:00-1:00 with a funeral Mass following at 1 o'clock. Interment will be at a later date. The online guestbook is available at www.leitzeaganfuneralhome.com.
