Elvia Velásquez Mendieta

Elvia Velasquez Mendieta, 92, of Destrehan, Louisiana, passed away peacefully at her home on August 30, 2024. Born in Tela, Atlantida, Honduras, to Margarita Morales and Felipe Velasquez, Elvia was raised in El Progreso, Yoro and graduated from Instituto Catolico Sagrado Corazon-Liceo Hondureño in Tegucigalpa.

Elvia was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her beloved husband, Roberto Mendieta, her children Elvia Hall and husband Mario Hall, Fernando Mendieta and wife Rina Mendieta, and Vivian Navarro and husband Ismael Navarro. She is also cherished by her grandchildren Ashley Guidry, Amber Hall, Jessica Paz, Eduardo Mendieta, Joel Hernandez, and Jesus Navarro, as well as seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Eduardo Roberto Mendieta, and grandchildren Giovani Mendieta and Lorena Mendieta.

Elvia enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including cooking, painting, gardening, and crafting. She had a special fondness for reading, often immersed in the latest editions of Vanidades and HOLA! magazines. Her profound faith and dedication to the Catholic Church were central to her life, especially as her husband served as a Deacon. Elvia was the epitome of selflessness, always putting the needs of her family and others before her own.

In a momentous milestone, Elvia became a U.S. citizen on February 7, 2020. She embraced her new country with pride while cherishing her beloved Honduran heritage.

Elvia, who was affectionately known by her family as “Tita,” will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Her enduring faith and unwavering dedication to her loved ones will remain a cherished part of our lives.

Rest in peace, Tita. Your love and strength will live on in our hearts forever.

Nacida en Tela, Atlántida, Honduras, hija de Margarita Morales y Felipe Velasquez, Elvia se crió en El Progreso, Yoro y se graduó del Instituto Católico Sagrado Corazón-Liceo Hondureño en Tegucigalpa.

Elvia fue una esposa, madre y abuela devota. Le sobreviven su querido esposo, Roberto Mendieta; sus hijos Elvia Hall y esposo Mario Hall, Fernando Mendieta y esposa Rina Mendieta y Vivian Navarro y esposo Ismael Navarro. También es apreciada por sus nietos Ashley Guidry, Amber Hall, Jessica Paz, Eduardo Mendieta, Joel Hernández y Jesus Navarro, así como por siete bisnietos.

La precedieron en la muerte su hijo, Eduardo Roberto Mendieta, y sus nietos Giovani Mendieta y Lorena Mendieta.

Elvia disfrutaba de una variedad de pasatiempos, incluyendo la cocina, la pintura, la jardinería y las manualidades. Tenía una especial afición por la lectura, a menudo inmersa en las últimas ediciones de las revistas Vanidades y HOLA!
