Emma Wiest Denman, age 96 and retired Captain, United States Public Health Service, passed away peacefully on Monday May 25, 2015 at the Poydras Home in New Orleans. Emma was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and moved to Staten Island, New York at the age of 7 where she attended St. Christopher's Grammar School among others, St. Patrick's High School, Notre Dame College and received a Master of Arts from Fordham University. She worked as a Social Worker at several hospitals before being employed by the Marine Hospital on Staten Island. She was given a position by the United States Public Health Service to establish and operate a new office, and as a result she transferred to the Marine Hospital in New Orleans, later known as the New Orleans Public Health Hospital. Emma married Ygnacio Comonfort Denman Jr. “Denny” who predeceased her who was also from New York. Emma was also predeceased by her mother and father the late Emma Cosulich Wiest and Bernard M. Wiest both from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a brother Bernard J. Wiest. She remained in New Orleans until her passing. Emma loved to travel with her husband with whom she shared trips throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. Emma, an avid golfer, played well into her eighties. Emma was a member of the Metairie Women’s Club, Republican Women’s Club, The Louisiana State Poetry Society and Military Officer’s Association of America. She was a long-time member of St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Metairie, Louisiana where she participated in the St. Catherine’s Rosary Altar Society, St. Catherine Liturgy Committee and Family Life Committee. She was blessed to have had a long time devoted friend and caregiver, Carol Schexnayder, whom she loved and considered as family. Emma leaves a stepson, Phillip M. Denman in Louisiana, her brother, Raymond J. Wiest in New Jersey, three nieces and a nephew. Emma was a caring and insightful person who devoted her life to helping others. Her life will be celebrated by relatives and friends of the family at a Memorial Service at St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Metairie at 105 Bonnabel Blvd. on Saturday, May 30th, 2015 at 11:00 am. Visitation is from 9:00 - 11:00 am until the time of service. Interment will be immediately following the service at St. Patrick Cemetery #1.
