Gerard “Jerry” James Schiro Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and godfather, passed away on May 10, 2026. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on March 27, 1940, and lived a life devoted to faith, family, friendship, and service.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Carol Macaluso Schiro, and their three children: Gary Schiro (Jorge Munoz), Shari Schiro DeVille (Barry), and Gina Schiro Bankson Woolley (Jim). He was also blessed with four grandchildren: Giavanna DeVille Auduong (Adam), Sophia Bankson Martin (Samuel), Francesca DeVille (Vincent Signorelli), and Roman Bankson. He was fortunate to have several lifelong and devoted friends, and family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Schiro and Mildred Credo Schiro Schexnayder Montalbano; his stepfathers, Philip Schexnayder and Joseph Montalbano; his sister, Judy Coniglio; and his son-in-law, Kelly Bankson.
Jerry was a proud member of De La Salle High School’s Class of 1958, where he formed many lifelong friendships and earned letters in several sports. A devout Catholic, he lived his faith through years of dedicated service to St. Ann Church and School. He played an important role in the success of the school fairs, especially through his management of the food booth, and he also served as president of the Men’s Club. At St. Ann Church, he served as both an usher and Eucharistic Minister. In recognition of their many years of service, he and Carol received the Order of St. Louis Medallion from Archbishop Schulte, the highest honor awarded to a layperson by the Church. He also served on the school board at Archbishop Chapelle and inspired his daughters to help prepare the St. Joseph’s Day dinner for the school altar.
Jerry took great pride in his Italian heritage and was deeply involved in the local Italian American Community. He was a founding member of the Italian American Marching Club and served several terms as its president. He also became the final president of the Italian American Cultural Society. Through his membership in the Contessa Entellina Society, he was honored with the Outstanding Member Civic Award.
In 1976, Jerry fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening his own deli, La Cucina, on Veterans Boulevard. In 1985, he expanded his passion for cooking by opening a full-service restaurant, Schiro’s La Cucina. After retiring from the restaurant business, he began a new chapter in real estate.
Jerry cherished being surrounded by his family. He loved the history of New Orleans, watching football and the Saints. His appreciation for local music and dancing was passed along to his children. Jerry always had a story to share.
He suffered a paralyzing stroke in 2010. He didn’t let that stop him from living life to the fullest. He lived the motto that he often quoted, “Winners never quit and quitters never win.”
The Schiro family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Phalon Cornist and Karen Lugo for their care and assistance.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services at St. Ann Catholic Church, 3601 Transcontinental Drive in Metairie, on Thursday, May 21, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10 AM with a Memorial Mass at 12 PM. Interment to follow at All Saints Mausoleum located in Metairie Cemetery.
