

He is survived by his sons, Derek Pope (Heidi) and John Deutschman (Jennifer), grandchildren, Caroline Pope, Emily Claire Pope, Andrew Deutschman, and Anna Deutschman, and great-grandson Luke Deutschman. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of his sons, Frances Deutschman Pope. He is preceded in death by his mother Elvina Callais Throne and stepfather Alfred Throne.
Huey graduated from Warren Easton High School in 1954 and attended Southeastern Louisiana University. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961 with the rank of Sergeant E-4 and retired from the New Orleans Police Department in 1987.
Huey was a talented athlete during his high school years at Warren Easton, excelling at baseball, basketball, track and field, and football. As an adult he also enjoyed a good game of bowling, cards, chess, pool, ping-pong, and the challenge of a large puzzle. Huey attempted to transcend his athletic prowess to the children at Delta Playground (circa 1972-1978) where he was affectionately known as “Coach Pope”. His hobbies during his retirement years were eating a good breakfast at Tiffin Inn, solving Sudoku puzzles, watching sports, visiting the Casino’s, and ensuring his yard was free of weeds.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Metairie, LA. Visitation will be held from 11 AM-1 PM with a Mass to begin at 1 PM. Interment will follow at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association at act.alz.org.
